Essays: Write on two of the following topics for a possible total of 50 points each. Be sure to describe and highlight the important points of each term, and point out the historical significance of each. Four of the following five questions will appear on the exam.
1. Compare and contrast the indigenous North American civilizations; describe the conquests of the Americas and the development of the Columbian Exchange.
2. Compare and contrast the Spanish. English. Dutch, French, and other colonization enterprises in North America and the conflicts that came with colonizing efforts in North America.
3. Describe English colonization in North America: Virginia, New England, and the problems that gave rise to Bacon's Rebellion, and King Philip's War.
4. Describe the Puritan family and social structure with and emphasis on class and gender and issues related to shared governance, property, marriage, and inheritance. In what ways were these elements of culture reflected in the story of Rebecca Rawson (1656-92).
5. Describe mercantilism and the patterns of trade in the English-American colonies.
