Problem: Given that many organisms face trade-offs, and that much of the diversity of organismal life histories in both animals and plants revolves around finding the right balance between allocation to growth and allocation to other critical life functions, what do you think is happening in these plants? Stated another way, if all it took was a change to expression of one key developmental gene to get plants to grow to twice their normal size, why hasn't this occurred naturally in these plant populations?? Does the fact that it hasn't occurred naturally suggest there might be pleiotropic consequences or negative fitness impacts that we just don't know about yet? And if so, why?
