Assignment Instructions:
Step 1: Choose an Article on a Project-Related Topic
Find an article related to your topic. Consider news sources, academic journal articles, blogs, and community-generated writing. You can use the ASU library, internet search engines, or Google Scholar for help.
Step 2: Analyze and Compose
Next, compose and post a 3-paragrap discussion. Use the following questions to help you fully address bias in your chosen article. Specific examples will provide detail to your discussion.
Describe the example you chose: Who is the author of the piece? What publication or website hosts the article? What is the intention of the writing? Would you define the writing as presenting an informed viewpoint or a bias?
Explain where bias may exist in the article via research about the piece: What can you determine about the author and publication or website? Do you believe the author is writing from a position of authority on the subject matter?
Explain what you believe your reaction to the article says about your own bias: Does the material align with your beliefs? If not, do you dispute the facts contained within the article?
Step 3: Describe Critical Thinking Strategies for Future Research
Compose and post a 1-2 paragraph discussion regarding how your analysis of bias in future articles will change. Use the following questions to help you fully express new tools for research.
What online platforms will you use more frequently for research in the future? What platforms will you employ less often?
How might you use articles that display a clear bias in research-based writing? What types of bias serve to disqualify a source?
How has this exercise changed your standards for evaluating source material?
