Assignment task: Please read the attached post and respond with two to three paragraphs with in text citations and references. Thank you.
My topic is about the links between causes and prevention of suicide. Suicide, a prominent public health issue, claims approximately 800,000 lives worldwide annually and stands as the second leading cause of death among adolescents and young adults. Rates of suicide and nonfatal self-injury have witnessed unprecedented rises not only in the United States but also in numerous other countries globally. (Martinez-Ales et al., 2020, p 1).
Four articles were reviewed using studies from different continents of the world to have a global idea about the common causes and prevention of suicide. CINHAL Plus, with a Full-Text database, was used to conduct my search articles.
In my initial exploration of research articles within the CINHAL Plus with Full-Text database, I identified 3, 597 reports using "Stigma and mental illness" as the primary filter. Upon introducing depression and prevention, then selecting Peer Reviewed Scholarly Journals and age, hence, the articles reduced to 108, finally 19.
To increase the rigor and effectiveness of a database search on my PICO(T) question, I will consider the following strategies:
Use filters such as publication date, study type, and language to narrow down results. For example, if you want only recent studies, set a filter for the last five years.
Maintain a record of your search strategy, including the terms used, filters applied, and databases searched. This documentation aids in transparency and reproducibility.
Utilize Boolean Operators: Combine search terms effectively using AND, OR, NOT. For instance: "Bullying AND Stigma AND Depression AND Suicide," "Bullying OR Harassment OR Intimidation AND Stigma OR Discrimination AND Depression AND Suicide."
Clearly define the key concepts in my PICO(T) question. Use synonyms and related terms to ensure comprehensive coverage. For example: "Bullying" could include words like "harassment," "intimidation," or "victimization." "Stigma" might involve terms such as "social stigma," "mental health stigma," or "discrimination." "Depression" could encompass words like "mood disorders" or "psychological distress."
By applying these strategies, you can conduct a rigorous and practical database search on the link between bullying, stigma, depression, and suicide, thereby contributing to a comprehensive understanding of these interconnected factors for suicide awareness and prevention strategies.
Incorporating evidence-based practice (EBP) into the daily routines of healthcare professionals holds the potential to enhance the practice environment and elevate patient outcomes. Nurses are encouraged to expand their knowledge base, standardize their practices, and strive for improved patient outcomes. Abu-Baker, et., 2021).
