Lab and Food Safety & Scientific Method

1. You are a research assistant working on a project to figure out how much vitamin C is in different commercial juices.  You'll be adding various chemicals to the juices and testing them. Describe at least three lab safety precautions you'll take to avoid injury and explain why you chose these actions.

2. As you're working with the juices and chemicals, you accidentally knock over one of the beakers containing the chemical solution and splash a little on your hand.  This solution is acidic and can be caustic to skin.  What should you do first?  How would you proceed to clean up this spill? 3. You recently attended a family reunion picnic, and shortly after, you heard through the family grapevine that many of the attendees had the "stomach flu" after the picnic.   Since you're taking a nutrition course, you understand that this may be a foodborne illness and are determined to track the source from foods at the picnic.  Choose one common picnic food, and using the FAT TOM food safety conditions, explain how this pathogen could have been transmitted.

4. Consider all that you've learned about lab safety in this lesson and provide two examples for how you could apply this knowledge to your everyday life as a non-scientist.  Be sure to relate your experiences to specific lab safety procedures.

5. Think of a question you've had about something around you. Maybe it's a manufacturer's claim about a product or how two substances would interact. Design a hypothetical research study using the steps of scientific method to attempt to answer this question.

6. Although you may not realize it, you use the steps of scientific method in daily life to solve problems. Consider the following:

You put two slices of bread in the toaster for breakfast, push the button and nothing happens!  Explain how you figure out the problem using the steps of scientific method.
