Describe at least six means of identifying a covert member

PART I

Directions: Read the prompts below and formulate a response of at least one half of one page in length for each question. Please use examples from the textbook, if applicable.

1. Contemplate the nature and extent of the current threat to the nation and to individuals who are targeted by terrorists and terrorist groups. Write about what you feel is the most vulnerable area(s) in the United States to terrorism and what suggestions can you offer as preventative measures?

2. Expand on the understanding that many people in the United States are not anarchists but are often concerned with environmental and animal rights issues, and others are concerned with the fate of pre-born human babies that causes them to legally (or illegally) demonstrate or peacefully reach out to those they perceive to be in danger.

3. Put yourself in the place of a Federal Forest Ranger in Alaska who has come upon a special interest terrorism group (burning down the Ranger's living quarters on behalf of some endangered species). You recognize that they do not want to overthrow the government but they do want to force their views on the general population in violent and destructive ways. Write about your thinking in this situation and how you would immediately handle the situation.

4. Describe at least six means of identifying a covert member of a clandestine organization and how this information would be effective in understanding terrorism.

5. In this module, you became aware of some of the political issues that motivate people to become terrorists and the groups they are members of both left-wing and right-wing that wish to overthrow the government or control it in some way. In an undercover operation, you are in charge of the covert member and she has been discovered by the terrorists. Outline what you must do when the covert member is identified.

6. Identify, analyze, and discuss the type of terrorism involved in the following incidents:

a. March 11, 2003, Chico, California: An attempt was made to burn a McDonald's restaurant. An incendiary device scorched the building's rear wall in the pre-dawn arson attempt. "ALF" and "Liberation" were spray-painted on the building. The restaurant is two miles from another McDonald's that was the victim of an attempted arson claimed by the Animal Liberation Front on March 3, 2003.
b. September 11, 2003. The World Trade Center terrorist attacks.
c. Between May 1978 and April 1995, Theodore Kaczynski, known as the "Unabomber", detonated bombs across the country.

7. Identify five ways or means by which a covert member of a terrorist group or a surface person having direct contact with a clandestine organization can be identified (Appendix lll p.443).

8. In the world of terrorists, explain these terms:

a. Army of God
b. Jihad
c. Lone Wolf
d. Tree Huggers
e. Skinheads
