Assignment Task:
Emma, a 22-year-old cisgender female, has been experiencing homelessness for the last 4 years in Saskatoon. Emma suffers from diagnosed schizophrenia and has declined assistance, resources, and medications since leaving her family home after high-school graduation. She uses marijuana, fentanyl, crystal meth and other illicit drugs when she can. Emma is currently unemployed and has never had a job. Emma's mother, Melissa, a part-time educational assistant, her father an autobody technician, and her 8-year-old brother live in Saskatoon and have minimal contact with her. Melissa is the exception as she often searches the streets of Saskatoon looking for her to bring food and attempting to take her to the emergency department for care and detoxification. Emma occasionally shows up at their family home or calls her mom when she needs money. Emma's father does not believe in mental illness and thinks she "just needs to stop this nonsense and get a job" Emma's brother is afraid of her, has no contact with her and has recently reported to his teacher at school that he doesn't have a sister anymore. Melissa has also been giving Emma money without the knowledge of her husband and is feeling financial strain as she has used her sick and family days looking for Emma and dealing with her own mental health that has been exacerbated by this situation. Due to stress, she has been increasingly absent from work, often taking unpaid days off, explaining that she "needs time to process". Melissa feels unsupported and overwhelmed with this situation as she is worried about Emma, the effects on her son, and the strained relationship with her husband. After a discussion with her son's school counselor, she has reluctantly arranged an appointment with a family nurse at a local clinic.
