Edge computing deployments are ideally suited in a number of situations. One is when IoT devices have insufficient connectivity and it is not feasible for IoT devices to be seamlessly connected to a central cloud. High latency, low spectral efficiency, and non-adaptive machine type of communication are some of the serious challenges of cloud computing framework that is leading to a shift to computing to the edge devices of the network.
Do you feel this trend will last? Why, or why not?
This new technology won't make cloud computing obsolete but will transform it and take advantage of its many capabilities.In fact, edge computing will be used for real-time sensing and decision making whereas cloud computing will be used to compute model parameters (in an offline fashion). In the future, an autonomous car will embark hundreds of GPUs and CPUs It will use this embedded computation power (this is a sort of data-center on wheels) to ingest live video and photo streams and makereal-time decisions (which could take more time if processed in the cloud and result in devastating consequences).Other cars connected to the edge computing network will leverage nearby cars to make better decisions and rely on their computation power when facing a challenging situation (a difficult road condition that hasn't been faced during the training process for example).Once a new obstacle or road condition is encountered, the car will make a decision and then upload the information to the cloud. This information will be processed offline (used to update a deep learning model for example) and shared with the different cars connected to the edge computing network later.
