• Define the 4 types of conversations. Looking back over your life, describe a time you have participated in each of the conversational types. What was the situation? Who was doing the talking? How did you feel in each conversation?
• Think about social penetration theory. Create a situation that describes each of the steps of social penetration theory. The situation can be fictional or real. You may write it in the form of a narrative, create a comic strip, write about your own life. The key here is to use the 5 stages.
• Chapter 8, section 3 discusses relationship maintenance. The mindfulness activity included in that section suggests using the RAIN method. While the activity in the book asks you to use the method with a romantic partner, it works as a communication method in any relationship. Use the RAIN method in a conversation with someone you have a significant relationship with. Describe the conversation and your attempt to use the method. Was it successful? Why/why not? (BTW -- I'll be trying this with my teenage daughter this week!)
• The following link is to a love style quiz published by the New York Times. While the labels to the love styles aren't the exact same labels as Lee's love styles, they are similar. Take this quiz to find what is says about your love style. What were your results? How are they similar or different to Lee's labels? Do you think it's accurate? Why/why not?
• This clip from How To Lose a Guy in 10 Days illustrates a number of the elements we learned about in this week's reading. Choose 3 of the most prominent elements you see and explain how the video clip illustrates those elements. (Use only Chapter 7 and/or Chapter 8)
