Assignment:
Create a 1250 word paper that demonstrates the relationship of a particular cause to the effect on a particular work of art, literature, dance, music, etc. As we discussed in class: What was the effect of __________ on the art form __________, in particular the works of __________? Please look at my writing guide carefully for expectations on how to be successful in writing your paper. You will turn your paper in through safe assign.
Be very specific--not general. I do not want a summary of an encyclopedia article about the life and career of Picasso, or a litany of the causes of WWI. Talk about a specific work by a specific artist(s) and how it relates to a particular event, movement, philosophy, or cultural shift. Describe the work in detail. Analyze for context and the relationship to the cause you are exploring. DO NOT SUMMARIZE.
You will lose a letter grade for each of the following:
PAPER
Papers will be based on the standards I have set forth in the writing guide , as well as an ability to work with primary sources and discuss them in historical context. (Feel free to refer to the sections of the syllabus on context and primary sources.)
A letter will be deducted for each of the following:
Does not meet minimum word count (Proportionally more will be deducted if you are well under). The works cited page does not count in your word count.
Paper contains mostly a summary of facts rather than original analysis or primary sources
Sources not cited in the text in parentheses (or footnotes, if not using MLA)
No works cited page
Poor grammar, spelling, and punctuation
Lack of context
Improper formatting
Does not refer to specific primary sources and rely on them for the basis of your paper. Wikipedia, or other secondary sources, should not provide the foundation for your work.
Writing in the first person. Do not write, "I think..." or "in my opinion..."
Inaccurate information
Does not follow directions
Paper is not formatted in an academically acceptable style. MLA is the standard for Humanities courses, but if you are familiar with another style, you may use it, as long as you do so correctly.
Using filler to pad your word count. There are examples of filler in your writing guide.
