I discussed how trust is established and maintained between clients and social workers with my site supervisor this week during supervision.  She stated that building trust with a client can be easy or difficult depending on the client.  Some clients are relieved to have services and will talk to the social worker like an open book.  Other clients are resistant to services and it might take more time to build rapport and trust with them.  Those that are resistant to services have either had services before and the provider did not follow through with what they said they were going to do or the client does not believe that they need help.  My site supervisor brought up a great point about maintaining trust.  She stated that some clients have court involvement or ACS oversight in their case.  If the courts or ACS request for an update from her, she likes to discuss with the client what information she will relay to the courts or to ACS.  I thought that it was a profound way to handle that.  Even though the client signs a release of information form, they may not realize what it really means or they may forget about it.  By discussing with the client what information will be given, they are not blindsided by what the social worker reports to the court or ACS.  It helps to maintain an open line of communication between the client and the social worker.

By keeping an open line of communication between the client and the social worker, process recordings should be easier to create.  The social worker can inform the client that a process recording has to be completed.  The rapport between the social worker and the client is already established, so the client knows that the social worker is not going to report anything that is not true or try to make the client look bad.  The social worker can explain what the process recording is for and who will have access to the process recording.

Process recordings allow for the social worker to document conversations verbatim between the social worker and the client.  It also leaves room for the social worker to analyze how they felt and what skills and theories they used.  Their supervisor can review what was said to highlight anything that the social worker may have missed.  I think having a supervisor review the process recordings may make a social worker feel like the process recording needs to be perfect.  Kurebayashi (2020) stated that process recordings should reflect on interpersonal skills without causing excessive anxiety.  My site supervisor told me that she wants to see where I am struggling, so that she can help me improve.  Having a supportive supervisor can help the social worker to have self-compassion as well.  As social workers, we know that there is always something more that we can learn from others.  Keeping an open mind and not putting too much pressure on ourselves will help us to service the clients in the ways that they need without burning ourselves out.
