Learning Outcomes:
1. Examine the TCP/IP layers, IP address classification and sub-netting
2. Demonstrate the various issues about network interface layer
3. Understand the benefits of Internet Layer protocols
Assignment Objective:
Case Study will allow the students to understand real world problems. The assignment will enable students to grasp holistic knowledge and skills with respect to Wide Area Networking concepts and protocols. Students will be able to perform basic and advanced configuration on routers and configure various routing protocols and IP addressing. The students will also grasp the concepts of NAT/PAT and will be able to configure NAT/PAT. This provides students the flexibility and confidence to deal with various real life scenarios.
Problem 1:
Communication and information technology are becoming part and parcel our lives and computer networks have gained significant importance and popularity during past several years now. The boom of internet and dependency of various technologies on it has significantly increased its importance in past several years, needless to say it is going to exponentially increase over several years to come. The demand for WAN administrators is expected to increase manifold in future coming years and skills that reflect the knowledge of Wide Area Networks and related technologies are probably going to rule the IT job market. It is therefore fundamental for looming professionals to acquire pragmatic skills related to WAN technologies. In context with the above briefing perform following tasks by using an appropriate simulation tool and write down a detailed report on the following.
Write a meticulous report on configuration of sub-netting and VLSM in routers. The report should include the definition and commands that are used to configure the above tasks in routers. Any routing device may be considered however for the sake of ease students may consider following routers Cisco 2620, 2621, 2811, 2901 and 2911. Any other routing device which has similar feature can also be considered for the scenario. The report should provide complete details about the IP addressing scheme used and how each of the subnets are created moreover VLSM should also be explained in detail.
Problem 2:
a. Describe the factors that led to the development of IPV6 internet protocol. Provide a detailed report on characteristics of IPV6 especially in terms of security and quality of service. Students are expected to reflect as well on the limitations of previous version of IP (IPV4) in terms of address space, quality of service and security. Your report should be support by academic reference duly acknowledging the source of information which again needs to be diverse like Journals, conference proceeding, books, published projects, white papers and other relevant peer reviewed and published academic and research material.
b. Review a Journal article or conference publication of an international journal or a reputed conference like IEEE, Springer, Elsevier or any Scopus or SCI indexed publication which is related to the issues in network interface layers. The students are advised to paste the first page of publication as an image in their assignment Problem clearly showing the abstract and publication information and then write the review with critical reflections, observations and commentary.
Problem 3:
Write a detailed work proposal for the above tasks with particulars related to the source of information, overall understanding of tasks, comprehensive schedule and timeline. The work proposal should be submitted within one week from the issue date of the assignment which is 7th of May 2020.
