Problem:

Public opinion significantly impacts the American political system by affecting elections, guiding policy decisions, and ensuring accountability of elected officials. Two examples demonstrate the influence of public opinion are Civil Rights Movement (1950s-1960s) and Affordable Care Act 2010. The success of the Civil Rights Movement was significantly influenced by public opinion. As public knowledge and support for civil rights increased, pressure intensified on legislators to implement substantial laws. This resulted in the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965, which were enacted mostly owing to the changing public attitude towards racial equality and justice. The implementation of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) was significantly shaped by popular sentiment toward healthcare reform. Prior to its implementation, extensive public discourse and opinion surveys indicated that a majority of Americans favored some variant of healthcare reform. This public endorsement stimulated political action and eventually resulted in the ACA's implementation, despite significant opposition. In both instances, popular opinion influenced the legislative agenda and guaranteed that elected officials stayed attuned to the interests and preferences of their voters.
