Define the Combustion of Solid Waste?
A chemical reaction in which the elements in fuel oxidize in presence of excess oxygen
C → CO2, H → H2O, S → SOx, N → NOx
- Reactions are a function of Oxygen, Time, Temperature, and Turbulence
- Higher Temps means Higher NOx Emissions
- As temp increases, volatile materials burn off into gas, then organic components "crack" and form gas, fixed carbon remains
- At 700°C, carbon is ignited to achieve "burn out"
- Heating Value of Waste is measure in kJ/kg and determined experimentally using a bomb calorimeter.
