A. First determine which critical capabilities your company needs if it is to win in your industry in the next three years
B. Second spread these critical capabilities throughout your ecosystem, not just within one organizational unit. Identity critical alliances or partners that your company should work closely with to better serve customers; innovate models, products, or services; and to act with agility.
C. Next, define the boundary and components of your ecosystem. Which functions should go to the platform as shared resources and capabilities?
D. Fourth, audit the current capabilities of your platform, business teams, and strategic partners. Identify weak links. How strong is the platform?
E. Fifth, build linkages and other mechanisms to share resources, data, ideas, and competencies with your business teams, platform, and strategic partners. Identify any opportunities to collaborate, and aim for win-win success
F. Finally, have individual unit leaders meet regularly to share experiments, initiatives, insights and lessons learned on the journey of capability building.
