Problem:
Cancel culture is a contemporary phrase coined in the 2010s as a method of banishing people, often celebrities, people of the status or power, from public life for violating the standards of political correctness. The negative connotations of the phrase donate a chilling effect on freedom of speech, freedom of expression and freedom of religion. Opponents suggest those who engage in cancel culture are inherently fascist, that they are in essence clearing the public square of any belief, jokes, or ideas that they don't agree with. Those who support the standards of political correctness say they are necessary to give voice to those previously disenfranchised groups to feel comfortable in civil society, all our institutions, free of bullying and intolerance. That it is the people who use phrase like "cancel culture" that are the fascists who want to make the public square only hospitable for people such as themselves. It can be said, that this debate boils down to how you view the purpose of the public and private spheres in social life.
