The Declaration of Independence and “Letter From Birmingham Jail” are considered examples of classic argument, share some characteristics, and serve as examples of the various forms of argument we have discussed in class.
Prompt: In a well-developed and supported essay:
• Analyze the two texts and their arguments—how are they similar? Different?
• Include a discussion using the terms of Aristotelian, Rogerian, and/or Toulmin argument
• Discuss stylistic choices the authors make (word choice, tone, structure, repetition, etc) and how you see that they contribute to the argument presented
• Support your discussion with both (1) evidence taken directly from the texts, along with (2) your analysis of the effective use of that evidence by Jefferson and/or King—this means use quotes
