Officials in the seaside town of Wildwood, New Jersey on the famous Jersey Shore have just passed a new law that bans the wearing of overly saggy pants on its boardwalk. The hip-hop fashion known as "sagging," involves wearing pants very low around the hips, and is a popular style among some of Wildwood's young male residents. In recent years, the Wildwood boardwalk has become crowded with groups of wild, partying young people. The new legislation was prompted by the large number of complaints from visitors, especially families with young children, who said they are offended by the groups and their fashion. Some influential people are encouraging Wildwood "saggers" to fight the system, saying the government doesn't have the right to tell them how to wear their clothes. The hip-hop artist known as the "The Game" has offered to personally pay the ticket for the first five violators of the new law, which goes into effect July 2. The saggy pants law isn't the only surprising news in New Jersey politics. Last spring, the city of Fort Lee passed a "distracted walking" law, banning pedestrians from texting while crossing the street. Violators must pay $85 fine. It's no shock that nearly all US states now have "distracted walking" laws that restrict cell phone use and texting while operating motor vehicles.
