David Farnham says that professional codes of ethics serve a number of purposes: 1. To promote ethical behaviour and deterrence of unethical behaviour. 2. To provide a set of standards or written benchmarks against which to judge behaviour. 3. To act as guidance when faced with difficult decisions. 4. To establish rights and responsibilities. 5. To provide a standard of principles indicating what the profession stands for 6. To create a contract between professionals and their clients. 7. To act as a statement of professional development. 8. To legitimise professional norms and justification for sanctions, when these norms are ignored, or unethical conduct occurs. 9. To enhance the status of the profession. 10. To provide a statement of professional conduct. Identifying client expectations.
