Data-collecting should be done both with the user's consent and for the greater good. The issue here is that privacy has become a really complicated issue, and in the name of convenience, many of us sign it away. When we sign up for Facebook, Google, or any other online service, we need to sign a (lengthy) user agreement, whereby we essentially sign this privacy away.
