The terms used in the cross-section of a road are :
Carriageway
The portion where traffic moves.
Shoulder
The portion outside the carriageway to provide lateral support to the pavement and for giving working space for stopped vehicles.
Kerb
A vertical or sloping member along the edge of a pavement provided for supporting raised footpaths or central median.
Median
A central reverse for providing space separating dual carriageways.
Chamber
Also known as cross-slope for facilitating drainage.
Side Slope
Slopes of embankment or cutting.
Roadway Width
Total top width of a road.
Formation Width
Total width of a road at the level of the bottom of the pavement. Sometimes, the roadway width itself is known as the formation width.
