THE QUSTION: CONGRATULATIONS! YOU HAVE JUST BEEN APPOINTED TO THE DIAMOND’S SPECIAL TASK FORCE ON CRIME IN CANADA
Your assignment as a member of this esteemed commission is to come up with a realistic plan to reduce the level of prostitution related offences in Canada and protect the most vulnerable practitioner of this ‘oldest profession’. Although you are somewhat inexperienced in this particular field you have had some recent exposure to the sociology of crime and corrections. Your group has been provided with an ample budget to deal with the above named social problem. At a minimum you will require input from various levels of the criminal justice system (e.g. law enforcement agencies). In addition, various data sources will be presented and your initial task will be to make some sense of what is available. Research and theory relevant to this subject are provided. This will present you with the opportunity to develop social policy that will REQUIRE AN INTEGRATED APPROACH of the various theoretical perspectives covered in the course that deal with these types of criminal pursuits.
Your report will reflect the contributions (and problems) of the empirical and theoretical sources referred to as you put forth a logical presentation for practical implementation to reach the desired goals of the task force.
Your agenda might include creating amendments to the Canadian Criminal Code, establishing proactive programs to educate both formal and informal agencies of social control and at the same time reduce the expenditures spent on criminal justice. The money to be saved can be put to the realistic programs and solutions you come up with. The answer to the above question must no more than 5 PAGES (MAXIMUM) (DOUBLE SPACED SIZE 12 FONT) IN LENGTH. Organizing your answer in specific sections e.g. The Research Problem, Theories and Strategy might be a reasonable way to proceed.
If any student wrote their essay on prostitution or related issues your topic for this question will be focused on violence against women following the format listed above
SECTION B –This question is worth five marks and counts for 5% of your final grade. Answers to the following question must be double spaced and no more than three pages (maximum) in length.
Minorities in Canada are over represented in correctional institutions and arrest figures. Discuss why this occurs, based on at least two different sociological theories. Include and define the major assumptions of each theory you choose. You might consider if the explanations for crimes by minority groups are the same as those for crime committed by non minorities. If they are different, what forces are assumed to influence one group and not the other? What implications does this have for correctional response?
