You can definitely market unsought products, it's really about putting them out in the public eye when they aren't searched for or desired. One way to this is direct selling. An example of this would be going door to door and offering homeowners a service, such as lawncare. Direct selling is you going to the public and presenting the product without the person actively seeking it out, meaning it is possible to market unsought products. Is it affective? Well that's a whole different discussion, often times a direct seller is immediately shut down by the target customer, but they can still make attempts. Another method is digital marketing. Using social media or paid marketing, companies can use algorithms to get their products out in front of customers who aren't actively searching for them. These products may appear on someone's Facebook, Instagram, or on websites they click. The technology knows their interests and puts related products in front of them so that a sale might happen. Similarly, business might use SEO features, which essentially is the utilization of key words on a website to get their product as the top search result on a search engine, or as close to it as possible. Similarly to marketing, this helps gets the product out in the eyes of more people without them actively searching for the product. This is another method to help create sales of an unsought product, and many companies see major improvements when they master the SEO aspect of their online presence.
