Changing for Success:
Create a force-field analysis to address the leadership team's concerns about what else it should be doing and to what it has not yet paid enough attention. The analysis has been started below.
Others should perceive our actions as leaders of today and as leaders we must shape organizational culture, communicate value systems, model ethical behavior, engage and inspire followers, and manage diversity. To achieve these tasks effectively, leaders must be able to integrate and obtain theoretical understanding of core leadership principles through research and study. The integrating process means that leaders must be able to convert their theoretical understanding into daily, observable leadership behaviors and practices. (Spencer, 1993.) Leaders who can integrate these practices are typically effective in both personal and professional arenas. Leaders are also able to lead organizations during difficult and challenging times. The ability to integrate theory and practice requires rigorous self-examination, flexibility, and the willingness to remain open to personal growth and change. A commitment to self-examination suggests leaders, as part of their ongoing development, continually examine whether their actions match their words. (Winter, 2000.) Leaders should conduct a periodic, personal gap analysis. If inconsistencies exist, leaders should develop corrective action leadership development plans. Part of developing a leadership development plan requires that leaders identify the competencies that define effective leadership and assess themselves against these competencies.

What should be done differently, although various leadership competency models exist these competencies consist of interpersonal and functional skills, both of which are important to the practice of leadership. According to Spencer and Spencer's (1993) research which determined that 21st century leaders must be able to display the following competencies:
