After reviewing the following profile of an imaginary student, create and share two IEP goals that address reading, math, or behavior. Remember to use measurable and observable verbs in your objectives. Make sure to stick to guidelines outlined in Ch. 2 of Writing IEPs and utilize SMART goal writing if that is helpful. Also, be sure to provide feedback to at least two of your peers for full credit.

PROFILE: Lewis is a grade 5 student who is included in general education classes with accommodations and supports. He has difficulty with reading comprehension and grade level math. Lewis demonstrates a variety of behaviors that interfere with learning. He has a history of getting out of his chair during class, is easily distracted, and often distracts others around him through his actions or words. Lewis can remain on task for 5-10 minutes when closely monitored by an adult and reinforced at frequent intervals. Classroom, district, and state assessments indicate that Lewis is reading at a third grade level. A review of brief classroom assessments indicates that Lewis needs to improve reading fluency, which will increase his reading comprehension. He is currently receiving reading instruction in an intervention curriculum and is working to improve reading with fluency and applying comprehension strategies. His low fluency has negatively affected his reading comprehension. Lewis also has difficulty with basic arithmetic, and is not able to perform two digit operations involving multiplication or division without a calculator. Lewis struggles with word problems, also.
