Problem
Imagine we are making a film version of What Strange Paradise. As you work with costume, make-up, and props you put a great deal of thought into the look of each character.
Choose any one of the major characters and create a sketch to help the departments design the look for the character.
With your sketch, you must (in writing) explain three key aspects of the look of the characters.
One of them must be an aspect of the characters that comes directly from the novel. Explain why this is a key aspect that helps to establish the character for the audience. Provide a direct quotation to support this.
Make two other aspects which are NOT in the text, but you feel will be effective in communicating that character's personality or background story. This could be part of the costume, part of the hair and make-up plan, or a prop that the character carries or uses throughout the film. Explain how this should appear on screen, and how it fits with the character.
For example: à Nike shoes for Vanna I would have Vanna wear Nike shoes. Every time she gets ready to take Amir somewhere, the camera will briefly show her putting on her Nike shoes, and centre the Nike "swoosh" logo. This is because Vanna's last name is Hermes. Hermes is the name of a Greek god. He was the messengers of the gods, and had wings on this feet for speed. Nike is the name of another Greek god of Victory, and the inspiration for the shoe company name. The "swoosh" logo was based on Hermes winged feet. This shows the connection between her name, and her job to deliver Amir to the ferryman.
Finally suggest a one sentence tag-line that could be used on the poster to entice people to see it. [NOTE: A "tag-line" is a phrase that helps generate interest in the film, without giving too much away. For example, the tag-line of Toy Story 2 was "The toys are back in town." The tag-line for The Avengers was "Some assembly required." The tag-line for Jaw 2 was "Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water..."]
