Assignment
Video Slideshow: Putting Academic Inquiry into Context
Objectives:
? Create and narrate a slides how that translates your academic argument for a lay audience and upload it to youtube.
Before You Begin Writing:
• This assignment will be your opportunity to share an idea that has grown from your research with a public audience. For the slideshow, you will present your ideas in the form of a series of images narrated by you through recorded voice over. Your presentation will consist of 15 slides or images, each displayed while you narrate its meaning to your project.
• This style of presentation is part of global phenomenon of public events--such as TED Talks, Pecha Kucha, and Ignite--where ideas are shared through texts and images. The format itself is a powerful means of sharing ideas with others in a public space first developed to encourage presentations that are limited in time and encourage an understanding of the relationship between visual and written texts.
? In class, I have relied on several such slideshows including Big Think, Crash Course, and The Big Pictureto introduce and enliven concepts we have covered in the course. This is your chance to become part of a conversation like that-just as we have turned to these videos to get an overview of complex topics, you're creating a text that might one day be used by an instructor in his or her classroom, or simply viewed by a member of the public who is looking for information on your topic.
Completing the Assignment:
• You will find or create 15 images that will define for your audience an idea that has grown from your research.
• You will provide narration for every image, 50-65 words. If, for example, you select an image that represents your primary sources you may explain how that primary source inspired you to think, or how you were the challenged by the complexity of that source. Whatever the connection, you must focus your script on helping explain the central idea you wish to express to your audience through words that correspond with or illuminate the images you have chosen.
• Create a recording of your narrated slides how and upload it to YouTube or Vimeo.
