Create a development profile of the child

Assignment Task:

This is a two-piece assignment.

Part A:

You've collectively pieced together, and articulated well, the essential message that I would like most to convey in this class. An excellent educator is open to seeing the potential and strengths of every child.  Differences are not deficits. Diversity enriches our classrooms.  And teachers can play an important role in the development of the child, not just academically, but as they develop and grow as human beings.  This week's chapter on Social and Emotional Development is an important piece of that story.  After you've read Chapter 12, and watched the four videos this week, I'd like for you to talk about self-concept. We learned in the readings that children in middle childhood are developing their sense of self - confidence (or inferiority), self-efficacy (or feelings of helplessness), motivation (or lack thereof).  How can teachers support a child's Social and Emotional Development?  Do you have a story about a teacher who told you that you weren't good enough or that you couldn't do something - and had that affect yourself concept? Or, do you have a story about a teacher who was particularly supportive and helped you with your self-image?  Do you think that a teacher's biases, even implicit or unconscious biases, can affect how they interact with children?  Can that affect children's self-concept?  What does that mean for us as educators? Part B: (This part of the assignment has two parts; do not forget this when doing part B.

Project Description:

Students will gather information about a child between the ages of 3 and 8 and create a Development Profile of the child.

Part One: Data Collection

1. Select a child between the ages of three and eight. The child may be a relative or a child that you have ongoing access to. Try to select a child from a family whose culture is as different as possible from yours.  If you do not have access to a child, please use one of the personas linked here:

2. Review NC Foundations for Early Learning and Development (NC FELD) to identify where you would expect this child to be developmentally based on developmental indicators and domains. Link to NC FELD:

Review: North Carolina Foundations for Early Learning and Development

The domains as outlined in NC FELD will be addressed in the Developmental Profile created in Part Two.  The domains from Foundations are:

  • Approaches to Play and Learning
