Article - Should Kobe Bryant Be Traded?
It's trading season in the NBA again and LA has a tough choice to make. Should they trade Bryant or keep him? Keeping Bryant has obvious benefit for the Lakers in that he brings a lot of talent to the floor each time he plays. On the other hand, trading Bryant would open up some dollars to allow the Lakers to bring in other players.
Why Keep Him?
It can't be denied that Kobe Bryant is a talented basketball player. He reliably scores the majority of the Lakers' points in each game they play. This is something to be considered. Keeping Bryant will ensure that the Lakers continue to get more of the same.
Kobe also has a loyal fan base and that raises the popularity of the team and therefore increases the sales of game tickets and other NBA merchandise. Keeping Kobe on the team will mean that the Lakers will continue to receive from that revenue stream.
Why Trade Him?
NBA teams operate with a financial cap on their player's salaries. This is done to make sure that no one team spends too much more than the other teams to aquire players. In LA's case they are spending a ton of money on Kobe. This is severely limiting them in their abibility to aquire other players. Trading Kobe off to another team would open up some cap room.
Kobe is a not a team player. His goal in a basketball game is to make everything revolve around him. As a result, none of the other players on the team are able to develop. As long as Kobe is a part of the Lakers they will always be a 1-man team with 4 support players. No NBA team has ever been able to be competitive with this approach. Freeing Bryant would allow other the Lakers to become a team which would help them improve.
Summary
There are two reasons to keep Kobe and two reasons to trade him. In the end the Lakers will make a business decision (i.e., what earns them the most money) while the fans are thinking of the issue from a strategic or emotional point of view.
Reason summary
• Keep him
o Lots of points for the team
o Lots of fans in LA
• Trade him
o Eats up most of the player cap
o Doesn't let the rest of his team play
