COU 640 Substance Use Disorders and Process Addictions Homework: Wellness Wheel- Southern New Hampshire University
Overview: Journal activities in this course are private between you and the instructor.
To paraphrase a popular saying: You must take care of yourself before you can take care of others. In the counseling profession, it is easy to allow care for your clients to dominate your life. Failing to look after your own needs can negatively impact your physical and mental well-being.
The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) has outlined eight dimensions of wellness. In this activity, you will have the chance to complete a wellness wheel and reflect on what areas you are doing well in and what areas could benefit from some more attention. This exercise will be helpful for both you and your clients in your counseling practice. You will also be able to use this resource and activity as you move through other activities in the course, including your final project.
Prompt: After reviewing the SAMHSA webpage on the eight dimensions of wellness and reflecting on your own wellness wheel, respond to the following questions:
A. Which dimensions of wellness are you currently satisfying, and how?
B. In which areas do you feel you are deficient, and how could you improve those areas?
C. How can this wellness wheel resource help you in developing relations and forming alliances with your clients?
D. How can this resource and exercise serve you as you work on your final project?
