The fate of all living things is death. Many cultures and civilizations past, present and future seek to determine how to meet this end. What is seen as honorable demise in one nation or era, may be abominable in another clime within the same era. Whichever side of the opinion we pitch our tent, death is inevitable. Pallis (2023) described ¨Death¨, as the total cessation of life processes that eventually occurs in all living organisms.
There are various forms of exiting this realm, some at the hands of others, inflicted on self, and so on, as well as various forms of definitions and classifications of dying. In Canada, a legislated form of dying known as the Medical Assistance in Dying/Death (MAiD) is continuously generating global media and social frenzy amongst anti-MAiDers, but the protagonists of MAiD and advocates are excited and pushing for further expansion of the eligibility criteria. Medical Assistance in Dying can be defined as ¨a process through which a doctor or nurse practitioner assists an individual, at their request, to intentionally end their life (Medical Assistance in Dying, n.d.)¨.
The MAiD structure currently excludes advanced directive and patients with mental illness only; at least till March 2024. This document will review this decision in favor of maintaining the ¨status quo¨ i.e. leaving the document as it is with respect to persons suffering mental illness and agreeing to effect changes with respect to advanced requests in cases of possible altered mentation.
