Consult medical references, dictionaries, and other official coding and medical references to write a scenario for each of the five causes for drug overdosing. Each scenario should be written as documentation found within a patient's medical record. Your documentation should include notes indicating the reason the patient is seeking medical care, the diagnosis, and treatment.
Then, using the documentation, assign the pertaining ICD-9-CM codes to each scenario. Keep in mind that most times you will have three ICD-9-CM codes. Sequence the manifestation codes after the poisoning code(s). (Sequence the E codes last.) Be sure to define data set definitions to select the primary and principle diagnoses, principle procedures, complications, and comorbidities.
After coding your five case studies, write about why you feel it is important to adhere to coding and HIPAA guidelines.
