Discussion:

During the past nine weeks, I have learned a lot about philosophy, theory and models. I remember touching on theory during my BSN program.

Nothing really stuck though because I didn't think about it again until this course. According to Hountras (2015), defining and articulating a personal philosophy helps the nurse better understand the motivation and reasoning behind his or her work.

After figuring out what I value most as a nurse I was able to determine my philosophy is based in caring, professionalism and advocacy. These things will transpire into my career as an APN also. I'm sure I will add a few more along the way!

I enjoyed learning about the different theorists and what they value most with the nursing profession. These women and men have propelled nursing into the wonderful profession we know it as today.

I truly believe associating with a particular theorist will help me be more mindful and provide better care for my patients. I identify most with Virginia Henderson's Nursing Care theory and Jean Watson's theory of Human Caring. They both incorporate a holistic approach to each patient which is important to me as a future APN. I also identify with the Health Belief Model.

Constructs from the Health Belief Model help to explain how patient perceptions of benefits, barriers, threat and self-efficacy influence their environment in both factual and challenging patient safety practices (Bishop, Baker, Boyle & MacKinnon, 2015). Through this model educational opportunities will be presented to help improve each patient's health.

By having a personal philosophy and theory and model I identify with I believe will be able to provide better care for my patients.
