Power System Protection - Mini Project - First Component Radial System Protection
A distribution feeder is 5 miles long and supplies a total load of 5 MVA. Assume that load density throughout the service area is uniform, and that a lateral is built every ½ mile, supplying a service area as shown below:
Install a recloser on the main feeder at the midway point.
Implement a fuse saving strategy for the laterals.
Assume the maximum fault current values at the substation and at the end of the main feeder are 8 kA and 3.5 kA, respectively.
1. Specify a suitable relay for the substation breaker, a suitable recloser, and a suitable lateral fuse.
Recommendations:
- Relayed circuit breaker with GE IAC 53 relay
- Microprocessor-Controlled Recloser (Cooper)
- Fuse link (speed = T-link)
The devices above will coordinate well, but feel free to make substitutions if you wish.
2. Construct time-current characteristics to show coordination between the substation breaker, recloser, and the fuse on the last lateral. Be sure to demonstrate that the fuse saving strategy works.
3. Also, propose a means of implementing "fuse saving" (do not cause a sustained interruption for a temporary fault) on the on the first lateral from the substation.
4. Submit your TCCs and a brief narrative of how the protection coordination works.
