A person's metabolic rate certainly depends on level of activity. However, a recent study suggests that metabolic rate is also related to personality type. For example, the performer, people oriented and living for the moment, might have a higher resting metabolic rate, and the artist, quiet, sensitive, and kind, could have a lower resting metabolic rate.
Suppose independent random samples of different personality types were obtained and the resting metabolic rate (in kcal/day) was measured for each using a metabolic chamber. An ANOVA test was conducted to determine whether there was any difference in population mean resting metabolic rates ( f = 5.83 and MSE = 52,025.4). The summary statistics by personality type are given in the following table.
a. Show that there is evidence of an overall difference in population mean resting metabolic rate. Use a = 0.01 and justify your answer.
b. Construct the Tukey 99% confidence intervals and indicate which pairs of means are contributing to the overall difference.
