1. The (artificial) data in the file qc.xlsx contains 5 readings per day of samples taken each morning.
(a) Construct a Shewhart control chart for these data.
(b) Do there appear to be any days on which the process is out of control?
(c) The target value is 10 and the upper and lower specification limits are 8 and 12. What proportion of the product does not meet specifications?
(d) Construct a capability plot (histogram).
2. The data in the file aids.xls come from a double-blind, placebo-controlled trial that compared a treatment group (treat=1) with controls (treat=0) in an AIDS study. (The controls were given the standard treatment.) Patients were eligible for the trial if they had no more than 200 CD4 cells per cubic millimeter and at least three months of prior zidovudine therapy. The response is time to death. Censoring is indicated by the censoring variable taking the value 0. The gender of the individuals (1=Male, 2= female) is included in the data.
(a) Give the plots of the Kaplan-Meier estimates of the survival functions for the two groups on the same diagram. Does the treatment appear to be effective? Does it appear there is a difference in survival between the two groups?
(b) Give the plots of the Kaplan-Meier estimates of the survival functions for the two genders on the same diagram. Does it appear there is a difference in survival between the two genders?
