Considering the future of counseling

Assignment task:

When considering the future of counseling, it seems that as we incorporate more technology and communication it will also cultivate a move toward more inclusive worldviews and understanding of individual characteristics. Hansen (2003) also reports that there is evidence that computer administrated tests have proven successful with safeguards that reduce errors and oversights. In terms of validity and reliability, technology use can expand the sample size and allow for increased efficiency in sharing relevant research.

Feedback and accessibility will also see improvements, allowing for those in special populations or those who may not have the opportunity to use more traditional formats to benefit from effective treatment planning. Hansen (2003) explains how software is moving toward programming that will also support the use of open-ended questions, more concise test construction and large-scale administration that will promote more efficient preventative interventions in mental health and the academic arena.

While technology will certainly never fully replace the human perspective or the comfort that is found in shared experiences, it can certainly streamline the process and allow more equitable access to larger populations.
