Concerned about something that he was noticing

Problem: After about two months of teaching, Mr. Evans began to be concerned about something that he was noticing in his math class.  He was so concerned, that he talked with his colleague, Ms. Lopez (who has ten years of experience) about it.  Mr. Evans told Ms. Lopez that he felt frustrated and anxious because there appeared to be two groups in his 10th grade class. Ms. Lopez asked him to identify the groups. Mr. Evans suggested that there is a group that learns the concepts easily and one that doesn't. The latter group seems to guess when it comes time for the weekly test.  Mr. Evans reported that his student Jessica, for example, was part of the low-performing group. She told him that she wasn't good at math and neither was her brother. Jessica concluded that her family didn't have the ability to do well in math. Mr. Evans reminded her that she had 80s on her last two tests, but Jessica said that she really didn't understand what she was doing. She just guessed at the answers and got them right
