Compute the magnitude of the force p at the free end


A solid steel shaft 3 in. in diameter and 4 ft long is fixed at one end and free at the other, as shown. The shaft is subjected to an axial tensile load of 50,000 lb.

Compute the magnitude of the force P at the free end necessary to reduce the stress at point B to zero. Then compute the maximum combined stress at point A.
