Homework: Narrative Draft
Length: 1000 words.
The goal of this homework is to introduce you to narrative writing. A narrative essay recreates an event or events around a central purpose: usually to reveal some insight about the action and/or the individuals involved. In other words, you need to tell a story to entertain your readers, but your readers should also take away some message or insight from your story that they can apply in their own lives.
Task
Compose a short narrative essay using one of the maxims below. Your narrative can be written in either the first or third person. Remember to keep in mind all the key narrative elements: purpose, action, conflict, point of view, key events, and dialogue.
Another important point to remember is that a narrative's thesis statement is not really a traditional thesis statement like one found in argumentative or analytical/expository essays. In fact, this homework sort of delivers your thesis statement in the form of a maxim.
A maxim is a concise statement of a generally recognized truth. Noting the key narrative elements above, write a personal narrative that illustrates one of the following maxims:
o A little learning is a dangerous thing
o The more things change, the more they stay the same
o Don't judge a book by its cover
o The road to hell is paved with good intentions
o The long way round is the short way home
o A chain is only as strong as its weakest link
o More flies are caught with honey than vinegar
o Lost time is never found
o A clean conscience makes a soft pillow
o Every slip is not a fall
o "Ifs" and "Buts" butter no bread
o Youth is wasted on the young
o A fool and his money are soon parted
o Experience is the best teacher
o Good fences make good neighbors
o Necessity is the mother of invention
o Revenge is a dish best served cold
Format your homework according to the following formatting requirements:
o The answer should be typed, using Times New Roman font (size 12), double spaced, with one-inch margins on all sides.
o The response also includes a cover page containing the title of the homework, the student's name, the course title, and the date. The cover page is not included in the required page length.
o Also include a reference page. The Citations and references must follow APA format. The reference page is not included in the required page length.
