Assignment Task: Critical Review and Presentation
The purpose of the assessment is to analyse and evaluate the complexity of key globalisation factors in relation to tourism and the future directions of sustainable tourism. The assessment is an opportunity for students to research two (2) issues from case studies in the course and/or other tourism issues and present them using graphs, visuals, models and/or any other supplementary information in the form of a written work and a presentation. This assessment contributes 70% to final mark. This assessment is undertaken in two parts and will be marked against the marking criteria provided. Learning outcomes 1, 3, and 4 are assessed by this assessment.
Learning outcomes:
I. Analyse and evaluate the complexity of key globalisation factors in relation to tourism.
II. Evaluate and analyse the strengths and weaknesses in global academic research of the tourism industry.
III. Determine future directions of sustainable tourism globally.
Task 1:
1. In small groups; you are required to undertake a written critical review of a journal article based on a contemporary tourism topic and present your findings (1750 words). The article and its review will present an interesting angle and encourage discussion. You will submit the critical review to Moodle.
2. In small groups; present an overview of your critical review in class (about 10-15 minutes) and facilitate one or more class discussion(s) based on your topic, using discussion questions, a case study, an interview and/or an exercise or activity (aim for 40 minutes in total). Provide a copy of any hand-out material.
Task 2:
3. The first stage is to produce a thematic literature review on your chosen issue. Present this to a professional standard with a maximum of 1750 words. Although you are encouraged to engage with a variety of contemporary sources in relation to your topic, you are also expected to include a variety of quality academic sources (including a minimum of 8 academic/peer reviewed sources of which the majority should be peer reviewed journal articles, ensure that articles are current (not older than 2014). Examples are used to support the topics chosen.
4. The second stage is then to present your research findings of your contemporary tourism issues in an oral presentation format. You can use a slideshow or a poster to support your presentation. You must relate the impact of your issue to organisations nationally (NZ) and internationally (at least three examples including at least 1 international example). Focus specifically on the implications for the tourism industry. Within your work you are required to make suitable recommendations for a sustainable future and also demonstrate the use of a business or tourism model/theory. The presentation will be no more than 10-12 minutes.
5. You will attend the presentation session and enter in discussion responding to questions asked of your presentation.
