The Virginia Cooperative Extension Service provides yield data and other performance statistics on barley as well as a summary of the growing season. A random sample of barley varieties was obtained and the 2013 yield ( y, in bushels per acre) and the date headed (x, number of days since the beginning of the calendar year at which 50% of the heads have emerged from the plants) are given in the following table.
