Film Critique
A film critique should be of a film that addresses one of the breadth areas from a global perspective, for example, Hotel Rwanda for the social/civic essay or Gandhi for the value/meaning essay. Start your essay by introducing the name of the film, its country of origin, when it was released, and who directed it. Write a brief paragraph to outline the story of the film and then compose your essay to address some of the questions given below. Please do NOT write about the plot of the film beyond any introductory first paragraph; focus on learning, using plot elements only as a context for learning.

• What did you learn? How was it a learning experience for you?

• How did the film broaden your perspective in this breadth area?

• What did you learn? How was it a learning experience for you?

• Did the film challenge any preconceptions or assumptions that you hold?

Art/Expression:
• What is the artistic focus of the film (e.g., a particular artist, a particular genre, or was the film particularly artful in its presentation of another theme?)

Science/Description:
• What is the scientific subject explored in the film?

• How did the film broaden or change your understanding of a global, scientific, environmental, etc. subject or issue?

Social/Civic:
Focus your essay on the culture or cultures represented in the film.

• What did you learn about another culture through the film? Include details as well as large themes.

• Did the film challenge any preconceptions or assumptions that you hold?

• Was your view of a global social/civic issue broadened or changed by the film? How?

Value/Meaning:
• What world religion or belief system, different from your own, was explored in this film?

• What did you learn? How was it a learning experience for you?
