Assignment Task 1: Compensation and Fair Market Value
The president of the medical board wants to hire a premier sub-specialist to increase patient volume and income. The subspecialist's reputation is such that your hospital would quickly become the "go-to" destination for this subspecialty. However, he demands a 50% higher salary than other medical staff members. What role does fair market value play in the facility's decision?
Assignment Task 2: Scope of practice and appropriate levels of care
In many states, nurses are campaigning to be allowed to practice "to the full scope of practice," in other words, to provide medical care, sometimes independent of physician oversight (which physician professional societies oppose). What are the pros and cons of practicing independent of physician oversight? Do you agree with the expanded scope of practice? Why or why not?
At the same time, nursing (and the nurses' union) opposes the expanded use of lower-skilled LPNs and technicians in clinical settings. Do you agree with the nursing unions? Why or Why not?
