Problem: Chose to compare the UW Health/ Unity Point Health- Meriter- Madison Surgery Center with the SSM (St. Mary's Medical) Health Surgery Center. Both are in Madison and in proximity of one another. Both are same day, outpatient surgical facilities, attached to a hospital. Both perform a variety of surgical procedures and offer various anesthesia options. Both have a similar check in process and have private pre- surgical and post-surgical suites. SSM does not perform certain reproductive procedures (sterilization, abortion, in-vitro fertilization) as it is a Catholic Hospital and is governed by Ethical and Religious Directives (ERD's). It will only perform certain procedures in life threatening or extreme situations (Rikha Sharma Rani of Fuller Project and Parker Schorr of the Cap Times. | AP December 21, 2019). Madison Surgery Center is not affiliated with a specific religious order, and they do perform some reproductive surgeries such as sterilization and post miscarriage removal of conception material, D & C's, and in-vitro fertilization. Otherwise, both these facilities perform much of same types and number of surgical procedures. Another difference is the type of managed care affiliation they have.
