In this lab, you investigated several factors that influence urine volume and concentration. Food components can also affect urine volume and concentration. For instance, caffeine is a diuretics that increases blood flow in the body, therefore increasing glomerular filtration rate, and increasing urine volume. On the other hand, alcohol inhibits the release of ADH, also leading to high urine volume.
A. Compare the effects of caffeine to the effects of the afferent arteriole diameter. Does caffeine mimic dilation or constriction of the afferent arteriole? Explain.
B. Compare the effects of alcohol to the effects of atrial natriuretic peptides (ANH). Does alcohol mimic or oppose the actions of ANH on urine volume? Explain.
