Common symptoms of all types of leukemia are caused not only by the poor functioning of leukocytes, but also by the loss of erythrocytes and platelets. These formed elements have a reduction in their number because the tissue that normally produces them is crowded out by the uncontrolled growth of the leukocyte - producing tissue.
