Assignment
Welcome to our Sport Event Analysis Discussion and Response assignment involving an international sporting event--The U.S. Open Championships. You will be required to submit a 500-750 word discussion post analyzing the event from a sports marketing, marketing research, or marketing manager perspective. You will then respond to (at least) two response posts. Your event analysis post will be worth 40 points and each of your two assigned responses will be worth 5 points each. Your post and response should be well-conceived, grammatically correct, utilize sports marketing language and concepts, and be unique.
Assignment:
Students will 'attend' and immerse themselves in a ‘mega-sporting' event and, assuming the role of a marketing researcher/critical observer, individually evaluate the commercial experience and environment. The student will publish a discussion post regarding their experience at the mega-sporting event with emphasis on the marketing aspects of the event.
Students may comment on:
1. Promotional strategies used by the event.
2. Advertising Objectives and Appeals.
3. Event Signage and Sponsorship Packages.
4. Media Selection, Appeals, Reach, and Effectiveness.
5. Sponsorship Objectives, Awareness.
6. Target Market for the Event (and the advertising appeals used for the audience).
7. Target Market and Sponsor-Effect Fit.
US Open Championships Introduction:
The U.S. Open is one of the most prestigious tournaments in golf and is one of the four majors along with the Masters, The British Open, and the PGA Championships. Each year the U.S. Open is played at a different course in the United States and along with the other four majors has among the largest purses and potential future monetary incentives (due to possible endorsement and sponsorship deals) for players who perform well. The U.S. Open attracts sport fans from across the world and consistently attracts large crowds of spectators.
