Central Heating System Design Assignment

You are to design the central heating system for the house illustrated in Figures 1-4. The house will be heated using a 42 kW boiler with a 20°C difference between the water inlet and outlet. A radiator should be placed in each main room and every bathroom. The report detailing the design should be a maximum of 5 pages, i.e. 5 A4 sides, including references plus one page for the isometric drawing. Please do not include a table of contents or an executive summary. Minimum font size: 12 pt Times New Roman or Arial. Minimum margins: 2.5 cm around the entire document. The design should include the following:

Report Structure - Reports not following the structure below will not be marked! Please present all heat transfer and fluid mechanics calculations separately in the respective sections - if you need to use combined calculations, briefly indicate in each section that the value was determined in another section.

Fluid Flow (4 pages)

  • Material selection for the pipe network.
  • Description of pipe network that will supply hot water to the radiators.
  • Central heating pump selection.
  • Isometric drawing showing the pipe network and radiators.

Heat Transfer (2 pages)

  • Justification for type of radiators selected for heating;
  • Heat exchanger design to size one radiator in one room - you chose which one - proving it will work over a range of conditions.

Note that different students can reach different solutions to each question, depending upon the method and assumptions you use. Much of what is asked here is an open ended exercise to train you in making real life design decisions and critically analyse the outcomes.

You will have to research missing data, design methods and make assumptions about anything missing.
