Clients who have a low sense of self-efficacy, usually from past treatment attempts/relapses, can be difficult to motivate in treatment. Effective strategies for working with depressed or defeated clients is to:
(a) explore the deeper reasons for the depressed feelings and promote healthier habits (e.g., sleep, exercise).
(b) use problem-solving, stress management, and practice substance refusal skills.
(c) encourage them to spend time alone to reflect on their feelings and to rely on others for strength.
(d) create a treatment plan and make decisions for them until they feel better.
